DEM & RECREATIONAL FISHERMEN WILL RECONVENE ON JANUARY 12 TO CONSIDER SALTWATER ANGLER REGISTRY PROGRAM FOR RI PROVIDENCE - The next meeting of the RI Marine Recreational Fishing License/Registry Study Group will be held on Monday, January 12 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Riverside Sportsmen's Club in Riverside (East Providence) (*more details on location below). The Study Group was launched in October for the purpose of evaluating the new national Saltwater Angler Registry Program and assessing its implications for Rhode Island recreational fishermen. The Group is co-chaired by DEM and the RI Saltwater Anglers Association (RISAA) and includes 15 representatives of recreational fishing interests and organizations from throughout the State. At the Group's last meeting in December, the Group agreed that a state registry program would be the preferred alternative to the national program, which is slated to take effect in 2010. The Group plans to spend the next year working through the various issues associated with a state program, leading to a recommendation to DEM Director W. Michael Sullivan, PhD for potential implementation by 2011. At the upcoming January 12 meeting, the Group will review the final federal rule, which specifies the exemption requirements necessary for a state to have an approved program. The Group will also assess the issue of reciprocity with neighboring states. -30- *The meeting will be held at the Riverside Sportsmen's Club, which is on Mohawk Drive in Riverside (East Providence). Mohawk Drive is a small, short street off of Rte. 114 (Wampanoag Trail). |
