DEM & RECREATIONAL FISHERMEN WILL DISCUSS DRAFT PROPOSAL FOR RI SALTWATER ANGLER REGISTRY PROGRAM AT APRIL 13th MEETING

PROVIDENCE - The next meeting of the RI Marine Recreational Fishing License/Registry Study Group will be held this Monday, April 13, at 6:30 p.m. at the Coventry-West Greenwich Elks, 42 Nooseneck Hill Rd, West Greenwich. Directions are below.

The Study Group was launched in October for the purpose of evaluating the new national Saltwater Angler Registry Program and assessing its implications for Rhode Island recreational fishermen. The Group is co-chaired by DEM and the RI Saltwater Anglers Association (RISAA) and includes 15 representatives of recreational fishing interests and organizations from throughout the State.

The new federal program, which will take effect in 2010, will require recreational fishermen to register with the federal government, unless they hold a registration or license from an exempted state. The RI Study Group has reached consensus on a draft proposal to establish a RI saltwater angler registry and seek exempted state status on the basis of that new state program. The purpose of the upcoming meeting on Monday evening will be to discuss the draft proposal with DEM Director W. Michael Sullivan, PhD and chart the next steps.

All of the meetings of the Study Group, including the upcoming meeting on the 13th, are open to the public.
