SECOND GREAT OUTDOORS PURSUIT EVENT SCHEDULED FOR JUNE 28 PROVIDENCE - Celebrating 100 years of Rhode Island State Parks, DEM is set to host the second event of the 2009 Rhode Island Great Outdoors Pursuit on Sunday, June 28 at a secret location in Warwick. The event features more than 15 free or reduced-rate activities designed to encourage Rhode Islanders to enjoy the recreational resources that state parks have to offer as well as increase physical activity and overall health.More than 312 teams, with over 1,400 participants, have registered for the Pursuit and are expected to attend on Sunday. The event is open to the public and clues to the secret location are provided on the program website, www.riparks.com/RIOutdoorsPursuit/Home.htm. This event it co-sponsored by UnitedHeathcare and the theme is "Fun for All Generations," so DEM is encouraging registered teams and the general public to invite their senior relatives and friends. Representatives from SilverSneakers, an award-winning and free fitness program designed exclusively for older adults, will be leading activities for all ages to enjoy. The event will also feature free health screenings, a putting golf course, paddle boating and kayaking, dancing with Hula Hoops, horseback riding, volleyball and more! The complete list of activities for Event #2 is below. Registration and check-in begin at 11 a.m. Teams that are registered are eligible for prizes, which will be raffled at the end of the day. Although only registered teams are eligible to win prizes, everyone is invited to come and participate in the day's activities. This is the second of five events planned for the 12-week contest. Teams receive points for participating in each event and will be eligible for grand prizes donated by local retailers at the finale on August 23. Prizes include a complete camping gear and vacation package, a kayak, a mountain bike, and others yet to be determined.
