DEM SCHEDULES 2009 ONSITE WASTEWATER TREATMENT SYSTEM INSTALLER EXAM FOR THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 10; APPLICATION DEADLINE IS FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 4

Prep Class to be Held at URI on September 3

PROVIDENCE - The Department of Environmental Management has scheduled an examination to license installers of onsite wastewater treatment systems on Thursday, September 10 at 9 a.m. at DEM Headquarters, 235 Promenade Street, in Providence. A second date will be scheduled if the number of applicants exceeds the capacity of the exam room.

The license applies to the installation of both residential and commercial onsite wastewater treatment systems in areas that are not serviced with sewer systems.

Preparatory material for the exam, including review of procedures and rules pertinent to the installation of onsite wastewater treatment systems, will be incorporated into a class offered by the New England Onsite Wastewater Training Center at the University of Rhode Island in Kingston on Thursday, September 3, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Location of the class, directions and University parking passes will be provided by the Training Center upon submission of registration form and fee. Although the course is not mandatory for exam applicants, attendance is recommended.

Applications for the licensing examinations and registration information for the Onsite Wastewater Training Center class are available on DEM's website, www.dem.ri.gov, by selecting "Permits," then "ISDS Designer/Installer Licenses," then "Exam Schedule for OWTS Licensing." Copies may also be obtained from DEM's Office of Water Resources at 235 Promenade Street in Providence, or by calling 222-6820 weekdays between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Applicants must submit a complete application, along with a check in the amount of $85 payable to the General Treasurer, State of Rhode Island, to DEM's Office of Management Services, 235 Promenade Street, Providence, RI 02908-5767, no later than 4 p.m. on Friday, September 4.
