100 YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF RI STATE PARKS’ GREAT OUTDOORS PURSUIT CONTINUES THIS SUNDAY

PROVIDENCE – DEM Parks continues its 100 Year Anniversary celebration and the 2009 Rhode Island Great Outdoors Pursuit with its second event this Sunday, June 28 at Goddard Memorial State Park. The event features nearly 20 free or reduced rate activities designed to encourage Rhode Islanders to enjoy the recreational resources that state parks have to offer and increase physical activity and overall health. More than 300 teams, with 1,400 participants, have already registered and are expected to attend.

Registration is free and begins at 11:00 a.m. Teams that register are eligible for prizes, which will be raffled at the end of the day. Prizes include gift certificates to C&L Stables and camping equipment. Although only registered teams can win prizes, everyone is invited to come and participate in the day's activities.

Event #2 is co-sponsored by UnitedHeathcare and the theme is "Fun for All Generations", so DEM is encouraging teams and the general public to invite their senior relatives and friends. Representatives from SilverSneakers, an award-winning and free fitness program designed exclusively for older adults, will be leading activities for all ages to enjoy. The event will also feature free health screenings, a putting golf course, a Capoeira demonstration, paddle boating and kayaking, dancing with Hula Hoops, horseback riding, volleyball and more! The complete list of activities for Event #2 is attached.

This is the second of five events planned for the 12-week contest. Registered teams will receive points for participating in Sunday’s event to be used towards the event finale on August 23, where they will be eligible to win prizes donated by local retailers. Prizes include a complete set of camping gear and vacation package, a kayak and a mountain bike, with other prizes yet to be determined.

upport for the project comes from numerous game partners, including the Rhode Island Department of Health, UnitedHealthcare, Macy’s, Hasbro, Inc., Kids First, REI, Reserve America, Burlingame Corporation and Whole Foods Markets.
