DEM ANNOUNCES REOPENING OF WINNAPAUG POND TO SHELLFISHING BEGINNING AT NOON SATURDAY, JULY 11

PROVIDENCE - The Department of Environmental Management has announced that Winnapaug Pond in Charlestown will reopen to shellfish harvesting at sunrise on Saturday, July 11. DEM's decision to reopen the pond is based on test results from sampling done by staff yesterday. DEM closed Winnapaug Pond and Point Judith Pond to shellfishing on July 2 because both coastal ponds were impacted by excessive rainfall and runoff two days prior.

Bacteria levels in Point Judith Pond are still elevated. However, results from water quality samples taken yesterday showed a marked improvement from the previous day. DEM took additional water samples from Point Judith Pond today, and results are expected tomorrow. If the results meet approved shellfish criteria, DEM will reopen the pond at sunrise on Sunday, July 12. If the bacteria results do not meet the approved shellfish criteria, the area will remain closed and DEM will continue sampling efforts.

Up to date information on the closure will be available on DEM's 24-hour shellfishing hotline at 222-2900.
