DEM TO HOST THIRD GREAT OUTDOORS PURSUIT EVENT IN CONJUNCTION WITH GOVERNOR'S BAY DAY
PROVIDENCE - Celebrating 100 years of Rhode Island State Parks, DEM is set to host the third event of the 2009 Rhode Island Great Outdoors Pursuit on Sunday, July 26 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in conjunction with Governor's Bay Day at two locations - Colt State Park in Bristol and Roger Wheeler State Beach in Narragansett. Registered families can choose between the two locations.
With the first two events at Lincoln Woods State Park and Goddard State Park major successes, the Department would like to get even more families involved for the next three events. There is no cost to register and all activities are either free or low-cost. The general public who do not wish to register are also invited to participate in activities, but are not eligible to win contest prizes.
The Pursuit at Colt State Park will include:
- Music featuring the CobraMatics 11:30 p.m. - 2 p.m., sponsored by the Governor's Office
- Bay Island Boat Tours on the Alletta Morris by Save the Bay, sponsored by the Governor's Office. Tours will depart at 12 p.m., 1 p.m., 2 p.m., and 3 p.m. Tickets will be issued on a first-come, first-served basis
- Old-fashioned Lawn Games with Park Rangers
- Walking, biking, and kayaking along the coastline with Rhode Island Blueways Alliance
- State Parks History and Kids Quiz - Self-guided Nature Walk/Hike
- Hula Hoop Fun and Lessons with DJ and Hoops
- Self-Guided Tree Identification Walk with DEM's Division of Forestry
- Department of Health Beach Program featuring sea creature face painting and little swimmers coloring contest
- Cooking Demonstration with Rhode Island Grown produce and food products by DEM's Division of Agriculture and Johnson & Wales University Chefs
- Arts and Crafts with Coast 93.3 sponsored by the Governor's Office
- Department of Elderly Affairs/ The Point giveaways
- Boating Safety Demonstration and Information with DEM's Division of Law Enforcement
- Touch tank and tidal pool from the Division of Fish & Wildlife
The Roger Wheeler State Beach Pursuit activities are all sponsored by the Governor's Office and include:
- Sand Castle Contest (Prizes awarded at 3:00 p.m.)
- Sand Sculptures with local artist Allison Newsome, sponsored by RI State Council on the Arts
- Entertainment from Lite Rock 105 and WPRO-AM 10 - 4
- Mystic Aquarium bio tanks
- "Fishing for Families" Program with the RI Department of Youth and Families Foster Parents Program
The Rhode Island Great Outdoors Pursuit is a contest to encourage Rhode Island families to enjoy the recreational resources and outdoor activities our state parks have to offer, and to get moving toward a healthier lifestyle. The Bay Day Pursuits mark the third of five events planned for the 12-week contest. Teams receive points for participating in each event and will be eligible for prizes donated by local retailers at the finale on August 23. Prizes include a complete camping gear and vacation package, a kayak, a mountain bike and others yet to be determined. The full 12-week schedule and game rules are posted on the program website: www.riparks.com. To date, more than 342 teams with 1,473 members are registered.
Support for the project comes from numerous game partners including the Rhode Island Department of Health, UnitedHealthcare, Macy's, Hasbro, Inc., Kids First, REI, Reserve America, Burlingame Corporation and Whole Foods Markets.
