DEM SCHEDULES ADDITIONAL WORKSHOP ON THE NEW RHODE ISLAND CONSERVATION EASEMENT GUIDANCE MANUAL ON DECEMBER 10 PROVIDENCE - The Department of Environmental Management announces that an additional workshop on the new RI Conservation Easement Guidance Manual, presented by DEM's Sustainable Watersheds office and the Narragansett Bay Research Reserve, has been scheduled for Thursday, December 10 at DEM headquarters in Providence. Registration for the first workshop, which is scheduled for November 30, is filling up quickly with a limited number of seats still available. The December 10 workshop will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in Room 300 at DEM's offices located at 235 Promenade Street. The workshop is geared toward municipal officials, land trusts, conservation commissions, and others. Additional presentations will be provided at a later date for attorneys and community planners seeking continuing education credits through the RI Bar Association and the American Planning Association. Conservation development is an effective way for communities to preserve meaningful open space in perpetuity as land is developed. To ensure that conservation values are preserved in perpetuity, a conservation easement must be carefully written and must follow prescribed procedures to maintain the desired conservation restrictions. Peter Ruggiero, Esq., AICP, Exeter town solicitor and attorney with Ruggiero, Orton & Brochure, will explain how conservation easements are drafted, reviewed, put into action, and effectively enforced to ensure that conservation parcels remain protected in perpetuity. Topics to be covered include ownership and management of conservation parcels; developing, writing and recording conservation easements; and monitoring and insurance considerations. There will ample time for questions and answers. Partial funding for the development of the new RI Conservation Easement Guidance Manual was awarded by the Rhode Island Foundation. Copies of the manual will be available at the November 30th workshop and will be posted on the DEM website, www.dem.ri.gov, and on the Narragansett Bay Research Reserve website, www.nbnerr.org, following the workshop. There is no cost to attend the workshop, but registration is required. Pizza will be served.
