Project Clean Sweep

DEM has partnered with the non-profit organization Clean The Bay on Project Clean Sweep: an umbrella initiative, funded by a grant from the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA), that aims to remove over 500 tons of washed up boats, docks, pilings, telephone poles, and other large and small marine debris that has drifted ashore in Narragansett Bay over time. To date, this project has removed over 250 tons of debris from Narragansett Bay.

The initiative also relies heavily on volunteers, who are contributing to the cleanup of the small debris, such as bottle caps, cans, and other litter that washes up along the coast. During the spring-fall season, the project conducts volunteer outings on a bi-weekly basis. To learn more about the project, please visit
