VOLUNTEERS FROM WILD TURKEY FEDERATION TO HELP DEM IN HABITAT RESTORATION PROJECT

PROVIDENCE - Fifteen to 20 volunteers from the Rhode Island Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation will assist in a habitat restoration project at a state management area in Coventry Saturday, May 31.

According to Brian Tefft of the RI Department of Environmental Management's Division of Fish and Wildlife, the volunteers will plant more than 100 shrubs that will be used for food and cover for birds and small mammals inhabiting the Place Farm, part of the Nicholas Farm Management Area.

"When DEM bought the property, there was a seven acre gravel bank on it," Tefft said. "Using compost, DEM staff created soil and turned that area back into a grassland. The volunteers from the Wild Turkey Federation will plant 75 green barberry seedlings and 50 crab apple seedlings on the recently restored grassland. The trees will produce fruits that last throughout the winter, providing food for a number of birds and mammals." Tefft, a principal wildlife biologist, is overseeing the project for DEM.

The volunteers will meet at the Plainfield Pike entrance to Place Farm, which is next to Carbuncle Pond, on Route 14 at 1 p.m.
