JUNE IN RHODE ISLAND MEANS PICK YOUR OWN STRAWBERRIES; AND DEM CAN HELP YOU FIND THEM PROVIDENCE - June in Rhode Island means lots of locally grown strawberries says Stephen M. Volpe, acting chief of the RI Department of Environmental Management's Division of Agriculture and Resource Marketing. Just in time for berry pickers is the Department's free annual guide to the pick your own berry farms in the state. "People look forward to visiting pick your own berry farms," Volpe said. "It's economical, you know you're getting fresh, local product, you choose the berries, and it's fun for the whole family. "Fathers' Day weekend is usually the biggest weekend for strawberries," he added, "but it might be a little later this year because of the cold weather and lack of sunshine early in the season." In addition to those farms that feature strawberries, which are generally available for picking during June and July, the brochure lists farms that offer pick your own blueberries and raspberries, both ready for picking in July. The brochure lists the farms' locations, hours of operation, and telephone numbers, and offers tips on proper picking, as well as instructions for freezing the fruits.
