PUBLIC INVITED TO GIANT PUMPKIN WEIGH OFF PROVIDENCE - Who has grown the largest pumpkin in Rhode Island? Find out at the fourth annual Rhode Island State Giant Pumpkin Championship Saturday, October 11 at Castellucci Farm in Smithfield. The largest pumpkins in the state will be unloaded at 10 a.m., with the weigh off at 1 p.m., followed by the crowning of the Rhode Island champion. Last year John Castellucci set Rhode Island's giant pumpkin record, with a 680 pound pumpkin. The New England record is 914 pounds and the world record is 1,061 pounds, according to the RI Pumpkin Growers Association. The association of competitive, giant pumpkin growers is holding the event, with endorsement from the RI Department of Environmental Management's Division of Agriculture and Marketing, and with the sponsorship of many local Rhode Island businesses. Open to the public, the event will also feature pumpkin painting for children, along with food and refreshments in a beautiful farm setting. Sponsors invite you to "bring the whole family to see the goats, sheep, chickens and rabbits along with the biggest pumpkins you've ever seen," and suggest bringing a blanket or lawn chair to sit on. To reach Castellucci Farm, take Exit 8A (Route 7 South) off Route 295, follow Route 7 for one-half mile, take a left on Harris Road, and continue on Harris Road for one mile. Those interested in competing in this year's event or receiving additional information can contact association member Don Langevin at (508) 222-9069 evenings and weekends. |
