URI, DEM HOST ENVIRONMENTAL SUMMER PROGRAM FOR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS

PROVIDENCE - Students from five Providence elementary schools are currently meeting and working with scientists in a two week environmental institute designed to motivate them to study math and science and to see themselves as college material. The program, Project Discovery, is being run by the Department of Environmental Management and the Urban Field Center of the University of Rhode Island.

Daily field trips to witness firsthand a kaleidoscope of natural resources with instructors from URI and DEM are designed to show the students that science and math are important in the everyday world, and to introduce them to people who work in interesting fields where those subjects are necessary.

From walking the forests of Northwestern Rhode Island to discovering an underseas world from a glass bottomed boat in South County, the students are becoming acquainted with the wide range of the state's natural resources.

The 36 students attending the current session are entering fifth grade at the Broad Street, Sackett Street, Mary Fogarty, Gilbert Stuart and Reservoir Avenue Schools in Providence. Project Discovery is the beginning of a continuum of programs leading to the URI guaranteed admissions program.

This is the third year that DEM and URI's Urban Field Center have collaborated on the environmental summer program. Recently students from Pawtucket attended a similar two-week session.
