As one of America's greatest estuaries and the crown jewel of Rhode Island's geography, Narragansett Bay is a focus of National Estuaries Day activities. National Estuaries Day will be a high-profile event to educate Rhode Islanders about Narragansett Bay: its ecology, conservation and management. National Estuaries Day will call attention to partnerships and programs3/4 such as the Depart of Environmental Management's Narragansett Bay Estuary Program and the Narragansett Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve on Prudence Island3/4 that are working to conserve this precious resource. And it will help to inform Rhode Islanders about what they can do to protect our estuaries: Narragansett Bay, the South Shore Salt Ponds, Little Narragansett Bay and the Great Salt Pond. Planned Events:
3-6 p.m.: National Estuaries Day with Arlene Violet (WHJJ, 920 AM): Arlene Violet will broadcast a radio show on the topic of Narragansett Bay3/4 its condition, its future, and what it means to Rhode Island. Participants will include marine scientists, fisherman, environmentalists and others who work for, and on, Narragansett Bay. *Guest list, schedule attached.
National Estuaries Day at the Rhode Island Mall. 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.: Narragansett Bay Exhibits: Organizations involved in protecting and managing Narragansett Bay will set up educational exhibits at the Mall3/4 the Narragansett Bay Estuary Program, the Narragansett Bay Estuarine Research Reserve, the Coastal Resources Management Council, Save the Bay, the Audubon Society of Rhode Island, and others. A touch tank will be available so that kids can experience the life of the Bay, and the Rhode Island Seafood Council will sponsor a chowder tasting. 11 a.m. - noon: View and award Narragansett Bay Poster Contest NBEP and the Rhode Island Mall are sponsoring a kid's poster contest focusing on Narragansett Bay, awarding prizes for participants. 1 - 3.30 p.m.: National Estuaries Day Concert, hosted by SNE's Donna Mack: Navy Band Newport, the URI Jazz Band, and URI Wind Ensemble will perform a family-oriented band concert at the Rhode Island Mall in celebration of Estuaries Day.
