DEM SEEKS VOLUNTEERS FOR SALMON FRY STOCKING
PROVIDENCE - The Department of Environmental Management's Division of Fish and Wildlife is seeking volunteers to assist with the Atlantic salmon restoration program by stocking fry in the Pawcatuck River watershed this spring. Volunteers have assisted annually with the fry stocking since 1993.
The fry, produced from adult salmon spawned in the fall, will be provided by the National Fish Hatchery in North Attleboro, MA. Nearly a half million fry will be stocked in the watershed through the combined efforts of the volunteers and division staff.
Saturday, May 6 has been chosen for the initial stocking. Volunteers should expect to spend most of the day taking small pails of fry and distributing them in assigned streams in the watershed. Waders and/or hip boots will be necessary, and additional pails would be helpful.
The Arcadia Check Station on Route 165 in Exeter will serve as the base of operations. Volunteers should arrive at the check station before 8:30 a.m.
John Brown, from Trout Unlimited, will serve as volunteer coordinator. Anyone interested in assisting should contact him at 783-4209 as soon as possible.
