DEM TO PRESENT SAFE BOATING CONTEST AWARDS TO FOURTH AND FIFTH GRADERS AT STATE HOUSE CEREMONY
PROVIDENCE - In recognition of National Safe Boating Week, May 22 to 28, the Department of Environmental Management's Division of Enforcement conducted an annual statewide poster contest for 4th and 5th graders. The posters express the importance of boating safety and the reasons for wearing a life jacket. The winning posters will be reproduced onto one large poster that will be distributed to elementary schools throughout the state, state parks and beaches, and vendors at the Rhode Island Boat Show.
This year the Department received over 100 contest entries. First, second, third, and honorable mention winners were selected in both the fourth and fifth grade categories. First place winners will receive a family four pack of tickets to the Mystic Aquarium in Mystic, CT and a life jacket. Second place winners will receive a family four pack of tickets to the Roger Williams Zoo in Providence and a life jacket. Third place winners will receive a family four pack of tickets to the new Hoyts Cinema at the Providence Place Mall and a life jacket.
Winners of this year's National Safe Boating Week poster contest will be recognized at a ceremony scheduled for 3:30 p.m. in the State House Rotunda on Thursday, May 25. Following the award presentations, the poster winners will be introduced in the House Chamber.
The contest winners are as follows:
1ST PLACE: Sarah Rubinstein, Tiogue School in Coventry; 2ND PLACE: Benjamin Algiere, Ashaway Elementary School in Hopkinton; 3RD PLACE, Susan Mitchell, Block Island School in New Shoreham; Honorable Mention: Kathryn Helterline, Block Island School in New Shoreham.
1ST PLACE: Katie McGwin, Quidnessett Elementary School in North Kingstown; 2ND PLACE: Danielle Howell, Tiogue School in Coventry; 3RD PLACE: Elizabeth Bellavance, Quidnessett Elementary School in North Kingstown; Honorable Mention: John Warfel, Block Island School in New Shoreham.
