DEM TO CONSIDER BLOCK ISLAND HIGH SPEED FERRY PROPOSAL AT PUBLIC MEETING TO BE HELD ON TUESDAY, JULY 25
PROVIDENCE - The Department of Environmental Management's Galilee Lease Committee will hold a public meeting on Tuesday, July 25, to hear details of a proposal by the Island Hi-Speed Ferry LLC to operate a ferry business from State Pier 3 in Galilee. The company has requested permission from DEM to berth a 122-foot vessel on the south side of the pier, which is owned and operated by DEM. The company would use the vessel for ferry service to and from Block Island on a seasonal basis each year from about May 15 to October 15, but proposes to commence operations this year on August 1.
The July 25 meeting will be the last opportunity for the interested public to voice opinions before the Lease Committee forwards its recommendations to DEM Director Jan Reitsma.
DEM has already held one public workshop on the proposal, where representatives of the ferry company described their plans and answered questions from the public. More than 50 people, including about 30 commercial fishermen, attended that meeting on May 31. DEM officials at that time requested a more detailed written plan from Island Hi-Speed Ferry LLC. The opinions and suggestions voiced at the May 31 meeting will also be considered by the Lease Committee in preparing its recommendations.
The meeting will be held at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, July 25, in the Narragansett Town Hall Board Room at 25 Fifth Avenue in Narragansett. The meeting site is accessible to people with disabilities. Those requesting interpreter services for the hearing impaired should notify DEM at 783-5551 at least 72 hours in advance of the meeting.
