DEM ANNOUNCES EARLY SEASON DATES FOR HUNTING RESIDENT GEESE

PROVIDENCE -The Department of Environmental Management has announced that the season dates for the early resident goose season have been extended to the full month of September.

Michael Lapisky, Deputy Chief of Wildlife at DEM's Division of Fish and Wildlife, said, "An earlier opening allows hunters more opportunity to harvest resident geese statewide and the addition this year of five days at the end of the season allows hunting after the late cornfield cutting."

The resident goose season opens one half hour before sunrise to sunset daily, from September 1 through September 30, with a daily bag limit of five geese and a possession limit of 10 birds. All hunters must obtain a Special September Goose Season Permit from the Division of Fish and Wildlife to participate in this statewide season. Permits may be obtained in person at DEM's Great Swamp field office in West Kingston or by sending a self-addressed stamped envelope to the Division of Fish and Wildlife, PO Box 218, West Kingston, RI, 02892. Permits should be available by August 8.

Hunters are further reminded that federal law requires them to carry a 2001 Rhode Island Harvest Information Program (HIP) permit in order to hunt migratory game birds. HIP permits are now available at no charge at local sporting good stores selling Rhode Island hunting and fishing licenses, at the Great Swamp field office, and at the Division of Fish and Wildlife's main office in the Oliver Stedman Government Center, 4808 Tower Hill Road, Wakefield, RI 02879.
