DEM TO HOLD HEARING ON PROPOSED WATERFOWL HUNTING AND FALCONRY REGULATIONS
PROVIDENCE - The Department of Environmental Management will hold a public hearing on August 30 on proposed regulations governing the 2001-2002 waterfowl hunting season and the practice of falconry.
Falconry regulations remain unchanged. Changes to the proposed waterfowl regulations include hunting seasons, bag limits, and methods of taking. Pending approval by the US Fish and Wildlife Service, the following waterfowl changes are planned:
- A canvasback season will be held from January 1 through January 20, 2002.
- A longer regular goose season will be held statewide from October 12 through October 15, 2001 and from December 11, 2001 through January 20, 2002. Special permits and reservations will be required for the South Shore management area fields. The fields will be open during the December 11 - January 20 season. The special permits will be available after November 13.
- The experimental late goose season will be shortened, and will run from January 21 through February 15, 2002, with a daily bag limit of five and a possession limit of 10. This season is limited to Providence and Kent Counties and portions of Exeter and North Kingstown. A special permit is required and may be obtained after December 13 by sending a self-addressed, stamped, business-size envelope to DEM's Division of Fish and Wildlife, PO Box 218, West Kingston, RI 02892, Attn.: special goose permit.
The public hearing will take place at 7 p.m. on August 30 at the North Kingstown Community Center on Beach Street in North Kingstown, off Route 1A just south of Wickford.
