DEM ANNOUNCES CLOSURE OF COMMERCIAL STRIPED BASS FISHERY FOR FLOATING FISH TRAPS PROVIDENCE - The Department of Environmental Management has announced that the commercial striped bass fishery for floating fish traps will close on Friday, August 10.Based on the latest catch reports, DEM's Division of Fish and Wildlife has determined that 80 percent of the annual striped bass quota allocated to floating fish traps has been harvested. Rhode Island Marine Fisheries regulations require closure of the fishery when that occurs prior the end of the January 1 through August 31 quota period. On September 1, the remaining 20 percent of the 52,951-pound yearly quota will be available for harvest, with an unlimited possession limit. The use of projected landings, closures, and modified possession limits are fisheries management tools used to keep Rhode Island within its assigned quota, while making fish available to commercial fishermen and consumers for extended periods throughout the year. The striped bass quota is assigned to Rhode Island by the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission. -30- |
