DEM TO HOLD PUBLIC HEARING SEPTEMBER 6 ON PROPOSED AMENDMENTS TO REGULATIONS GOVERNING DISPOSAL OF DREDGED MATERIALS ON LAND

PROVIDENCE - The Department of Environmental Management will hold a public hearing Thursday, September 6 on proposed amendments to regulations governing the disposal of dredge material on land.

The proposed amendments will significantly update Appendix B of the Rules and Regulations for Composting Facilities and Solid Waste Management Facilities, which governs the land management and disposal of dredge materials. The amendments promote the environmentally responsible and cost-effective management of dredged materials by defining the review process and alternatives for beneficial reuse or disposal of dredged material on land. The proposed amendments do not cover the disposal of dredged materials in the water.

DEM worked with the Coastal Resources Management Council, the RI Marine Trades Association and Save the Bay to develop the proposed amendments, which promote the beneficial use of clean, safe dredged materials while ensuring that contaminated material is properly managed.

The draft regulations can be found on DEM's website at www.dem.ri.gov/programs/benviron/
waste/pdf/landdisp.pdf
by clicking on Proposed Regulations under Publications. They are also available by calling Traci Lima at 222-6677 on weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The public hearing will take place at 4 p.m. in Room 300 at DEM Headquarters, 235 Promenade Street in Providence. The hearing room is accessible to the handicapped and DEM will provide interpreter services for the hearing impaired provided such a request is made at least 48 hours in advance of the hearing by mail, or by calling 222-6800, or TDD 831-5508. DEM encourages submission of written comments by September 14th. They should be sent to Traci Lima in the Office of the Director, 235 Promenade Street, Providence, RI 02908.
