WESTERLY BOAT RAMP TO CLOSE FOR THREE WEEKS ON SEPTEMBER 24 FOR IMPROVEMENTS TO PARKING AREA PROVIDENCE - The Department of Environmental Management announces that the Westerly boat ramp on Main Street will be closed for three weeks beginning on September 24. During that time, a drainage and stormwater treatment unit will be installed, and the 30-vehicle lot will then be paved. The treatment unit will remove 80 percent of solids such as sand and gravel from stormwater entering the Pawcatuck River from the paved lot, and a separator will remove oil and grease from the stormwater. The $85,774 project, funded from the state's capital fund, will be constructed by J. H. Lynch & Sons, Inc. of Cumberland. The Westerly boat ramp is one of six handicap accessible boat ramps throughout the state constructed by DEM to improve access to the water for those who are physically challenged. Rhode Island's accessible docks and boat ramp projects have attracted national attention with the Governor's Commission on Disabilities receiving inquiries from disability groups and recreation planners in other states. The state last year received the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Director's Equal Opportunity Achievement Award for outstanding accomplishments in the design and construction of handicap accessible boat ramps in Rhode Island. -30- |
