DEM ANNOUNCES CLOSURE OF COMMERCIAL SCUP FISHERY

PROVIDENCE - The Department of Environmental Management has announced that the commercial fishery for scup will close on Friday, September 28.

Based on currently reported catch rates, DEM's Division of Fish and Wildlife projects that the 337,817-pound quota of scup allocated to Rhode Island for the May through October period will be harvested by that date. The closure of the fishery is necessary to keep Rhode Island within the assigned quota allocated by the Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council and the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission.

The fishery is scheduled to reopen to both state license and federal permit holders on November 1, with a coast-wide quota of 320,000 pounds and a possession limit of 2,000 pounds per day.
