DEM ANNOUNCES LIMITED RE-OPENING OF COMMERCIAL STRIPED BASS FISHERY

PROVIDENCE - The Department of Environmental Management has announced that the commercial striped bass fishery will temporarily re-open for gear types other than floating fish traps for a two day period - October 13 and 14 - because updated catch reports indicate that 2,500 pounds of the annual quota is still available. There will be a daily possession limit of four fish.

Based on earlier reported catch rates, DEM's Division of Fish and Wildlife had projected that the entire 107,730-pound quota of striped bass allocated to Rhode Island by the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC) for the year 2001 would be harvested by September 27, and the fishery was closed at that time.

After the limited re-opening, the fishery will remain closed until June 1, 2002, when a new quota allocated by the ASMFC will be available to Rhode Island commercial fishermen.
