SEASONAL QUOTA REACHED, COMMERCIAL BLACK SEA BASS FISHERY TO CLOSE NOVEMBER 10

PROVIDENCE - The Department of Environmental Management has announced that effective Saturday, November 10 the commercial fishery for black sea bass will be closed in Rhode Island waters.

The closure, required by the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission, complements action taken by the National Marine Fisheries Service for federal permit holders to close federal waters to the commercial harvest and possession of scup effective today, November 6.

The action is based on federal analysis of current landings data, which projects that the 575,231-pound October 1 - December 31 coast-wide quota for black sea bass will be fully utilized this week. The black sea bass fishery will reopen in both state and federal waters on January 1 with a daily possession limit of 9,000 pounds.
