SEASONAL QUOTA REACHED; COMMERCIAL SCUP AND SPINY DOGFISH FISHERIES TO CLOSE NOVEMBER 23

PROVIDENCE - The Department of Environmental Management has announced that effective Friday, November 23, the commercial fisheries for scup and spiny dogfish will be closed in Rhode Island waters.

The closures are required by the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission. They complement action taken by the National Marine Fisheries Service to close federal waters to the commercial harvest and possession of scup and spiny dogfish effective November 21.

The actions are based on National Marine Fisheries Service analysis of current landings data. That analysis projects that the 708,469-pound November 1 - December 31 coastwide quota for scup and the 1,689,000-pound November 1 - April 30 coastwide quota for spiny dogfish will be fully utilized by the third week of November.

Both fisheries will reopen at the beginning of their new quota seasons, which begin on January 1 for scup and May 1 for spiny dogfish.
