DEDICATION CEREMONY SET FOR WESTERLY BOAT RAMP The Department of Environmental Management, the Governor's Commission on Disabilities, the US Fish and Wildlife Service Office of Federal Aid and local officials will hold a dedication ceremony for the Westerly handicap-accessible boat ramp and parking lot on Main Street at 10 a.m. Wednesday, December 12.DEM Director Jan Reitsma, Bob Cooper, Executive Secretary of the Governor's Commission on Disabilities, Senator Dennis Algiere, Westerly Town Manager Pamela Nolan, and representatives from the US Fish and Wildlife Service will participate in the ceremony. The Westerly boat ramp is one of six handicap-accessible boat ramps designed and built by DEM in the past five years, for which the Department last year received the US Fish and Wildlife Service Director's Equal Opportunity Achievement Award. With the help of the Governor's Commission on Disabilities and participating local communities, DEM has reconstructed or newly built ramps that allow easy access to recreation services by people with physical limitations. New launch facilities have been built at Weaver Cove in Portsmouth and Haines Park in Barrington, as well as at Main Street in Westerly. Ramps have been reconstructed at Bold Point in East Providence, Oakland Beach in Warwick, and Colt State Park in Bristol. -30- DIRECTIONS:From Providence take Rt. 95 South to exit 1 Take right off exit onto Rte 3 South Follow Route 3 to end Take right at light and stay right into downtown Westerly Take left onto Main Street just before the bridge into Connecticut Boat Launch is on the right across from McQuade's Supermarket |
