DEM'S ENVIRONMENTAL POLICE STEPPING UP DRUNK DRIVING ENFORCEMENT IN STATE PARKS AND CAMPGROUNDS

PROVIDENCE - The Department of Environmental Management's Division of Law Enforcement, under a $10,000 federal grant issued by the Governor's Office on Highway Safety, will step up drunk driving enforcement in state parks and campgrounds.

Beginning this weekend, on July 19, DEM's environmental police officers will patrol for drunk drivers in special two-person, four-hour details, separate from the officers' regular daily patrols.

"People often ignore the ban on alcohol at state-run facilities, and it can be a problem at some of our larger parks," said Steven Hall, Chief of DEM's Division of Law Enforcement. "We have a special problem with drunk driving at the Burlingame State Campground in Charlestown, because of its proximity to beaches and beach area bars, and because it is so heavily populated.

"These special details will help in DEM's continued efforts to keep our state parks, beaches and campgrounds safe for all our residents and visitors," Hall said.

The details will focus regularly on Burlingame; on a rotating basis on Goddard Memorial State Park in Warwick, Lincoln Woods State Park in Lincoln, and Colt Memorial State Park in Bristol; and elsewhere as needed. They will continue all summer, and into the fall.
