COMMERCIAL BLACK SEA BASS FISHERY TO CLOSE AUGUST 6; SEASONAL QUOTA REACHED

PROVIDENCE - The Department of Environmental Management has announced that, effective Tuesday, August 6 the commercial fishery for black sea bass will be closed in Rhode Island waters.

The closure, required by the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission, complements action taken by the National Marine Fisheries Service to close federal waters to the commercial harvest and possession of black sea bass by federal permit holders, effective on the same day.

The action is based on federal analysis of current landings data, which projects that the 400,101-pound July 1 - September 30 coast-wide quota for black sea bass will be fully utilized this week. The black sea bass fishery will reopen in both state and federal waters on October 1 with a daily possession limit of 750 pounds.

The recreational black sea bass fishery remains open, with a daily possession limit of 25 fish.
