DEM ACCEPTING APPLICATION REQUESTS FOR PRUDENCE/PATIENCE ISLAND ARCHERY DEER LOTTERY

PROVIDENCE - The Department of Environmental Management's Division of Fish and Wildlife is accepting requests for applications for the 2002 Prudence/Patience Island deer lottery. The applications must be postmarked no later than August 19. Hunters will receive their lottery dates in early September. Those who hunted last year and returned their mandatory harvest record cards will be given preference.

A lottery reservation must be obtained in order to hunt deer on Prudence and Patience Islands management areas during the first two weekend and weekday periods of the special season which begins on November 1. Less restrictive harvest strategies will be in place this year, reflecting the islands' increased deer herd size. The quota will be increased from 175 to 275 deer. Although hunters will be allowed to harvest one deer of either sex throughout the entire season, those checking in an antlerless deer will, as an incentive, be permitted to purchase an additional permit. The permit will be valid for an either sex deer, beginning after the lottery portion of the hunt, on November 16.

Applications can be obtained in person from DEM's Office of Boat Registration and Licensing at DEM Headquarters, 235 Promenade St., Providence; at the Fish and Wildlife main office at the Stedman Government Center in Wakefield; at its Great Swamp field office in West Kingston; and at deer vendor check stations, statewide. They are also available online at www.dem.ri.gov, by clicking on publications, then application forms. Applications may also be obtained by mail by sending a legal size (9 1/2" by 4") self-addressed, stamped envelope to Deer Lottery, DEM Division of Fish and Wildlife, PO Box 218, West Kingston, RI 02892.

Hunters must postmark and return completed applications along with a self-addressed, stamped business-sized envelope to the West Kingston address by August 19 to be eligible for the lottery. Two hunters may apply on one application; however, a hunter may not be on two separate applications. Duplicate, inaccurate, incomplete, or illegible forms will not be accepted.

This year, the Division is asking applicants to voluntarily complete a short questionnaire about deer management that is attached to the application. The information gathered from the questionnaire will be useful to the Division in making future management decisions. For more information, contact the DEM's Division of Fish and Wildlife's field headquarters at 401-789-0281.
