DEM INCREASES CATCH LIMITS FOR COMMERCIAL SCUP FISHERY

PROVIDENCE - The Department of Environmental Management has announced that the daily commercial possession limit of scup will increase from 100 pounds to 200 pounds on Saturday, August 10 for all gear types except floating fish traps.

This increase is based on recent projections indicating that the 1,086,936-pound quota of scup available to the commercial fishery from May 1 through October 31 will not be fully utilized under the current possession limit. The possession limit for floating traps will remain at 1,000 pounds per vessel.

This adjustment is part of DEM's ongoing quota management program, which is designed to allow some harvesting of these resources for as much of the year as possible.

The recreational possession limit will remain at eight fish per person per day until August 24, when the possession limit will be 50 fish per person per day until December 31.
