DEM DEBUTS INTERACTIVE RECREATIONAL MAP ONLINE
Public Can Gain Useful Information About Hunting, Fishing and Boating Locations in Rhode Island

PROVIDENCE - Looking for the perfect state hunting area, a place to launch that new boat, or just a quiet spot to cast a fly? The Department of Environmental Management has a new interactive map on its website that shows all state-owned management areas and all freshwater and saltwater fishing and boating access locations in Rhode Island. The map includes detail on all trout-stocked rivers and ponds and indicates whether hunting is allowed or prohibited within particular management areas.

Users will find that these locations can be displayed along with topographic maps, finely detailed aerial photographs and detailed maps of roads accessing the sites. Most of the boating and fishing access locations are also linked to pop-up photos of the site and surrounding area.

For those who have never used an interactive geographic information system (GIS) map, DEM has provided an on-line tutorial that is easy to follow, even for those with little computer knowledge.

To access the map, visit the DEM website, www.dem.ri.gov, click on "Maps," and chose the Guide to Hunting and Fishing in Rhode Island from the drop down list in the top right corner of the page.

The map is the newest overlay on DEM's innovative and interactive GIS internet map server, which provides environmental data in a visual format that is simple and quick to use. The department's map server itself was selected this year as a semi-finalist in the national Council of State Government's Innovations Awards Program. The map server and its overlays were developed by Paul Jordan of DEM's Office of Management Information Systems, who recently was awarded the department's Distinguished Service Recognition Award for integrating GIS into the mainstream of DEM and public use by developing the interactive internet map server system.
