DEM ANNOUNCES PUBLIC REVIEW SCHEDULE FOR DRAFT COMMERCIAL FISHING LICENSING PROGRAM
Public Discussion Set for Tuesday, September 24

PROVIDENCE - The Department of Environmental Management announces a series of meetings, workshops and hearings for fishermen and the general public to review, discuss and offer comments on new draft regulations and management plans developed by DEM to implement Rhode Island's new commercial fishing licensing program.

Rhode Island's commercial fishing licensing system will change as of January 1, 2003 in accordance with recently enacted legislation. DEM has drafted new regulations and management plans to implement the new legislation. These are available on-line at www.dem.ri.gov (click "Topics", then "Marine Fisheries", then "Commercial Fishing Licensing Program"), or by calling 222-6605.

The current schedule for meetings, workshops, and hearings is:
  • September 24 - Public review and discussion of proposed regulations and plans at RI Marine Fisheries Council meeting, Corliss Auditorium, University of Rhode Island Bay Campus, 6 p.m. Contact: Brian Murphy, DEM Division of Fish and Wildlife at 423-1941 or bmurphy@dem.state.ri.us.


  • October 19 - Public workshop on proposed regulations and plans at Weaver Auditorium, Coastal Institute, URI Main Campus, 1 Greenhouse Road, Kingston, 8:30 a.m. Pre-register at www.ci.uri.edu/projects/rifish/meetings; or contact Deb Morrissy at the Coastal Institute at 874-6513 or via e-mail at debim@gso.uri.edu.
