DEM, THE NATURE CONSERVANCY, ANNOUNCE CARTER PRESERVE BOW HUNTING RULES PROVIDENCE - The Department of Environmental Management's Division of Fish and Wildlife has announced a partnership with The Nature Conservancy to allow for closely managed bow hunting opportunities for deer this December at the Francis C. Carter Memorial Preserve in Charlestown. The 841-acre property was purchased by The Nature Conservancy in December 2001, with contributions from The Champlin Foundations and the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, and is a major addition to open space holdings in the area. The property, bounded by Route 91 and Old Mill Road, consists of a deciduous forest, pitch pine barrens and open fields. This is the first partnership of its kind in Rhode Island. The Nature Conservancy typically does not permit hunting on its preserves. However, hunting is part of the culture of the community and an integral part of the lives of many area residents, notes Cheryl Swinconeck, Francis C. Carter Preserve Manager/Preserves Coordinator of The Nature Conservancy. Both DEM and the Conservancy are confident that the limited hunt is consistent with conservation goals for the preserve. DEM is administering the program, which was jointly developed by The Nature Conservancy and DEM. Perspective hunters must apply for permission to bow hunt and be selected by lottery for the December 1-31 season. Twelve hunters will be permitted on the property during each week of the season, with 48 hunters in total having access. No other uses of the area will be permitted during the month. Only bow hunters with proficiency cards, either from Prudence Island or the Hunter Ethics/Landowner Relations course are eligible. Applications are available by mail, by sending a self-addressed, stamped envelope to Carter Lottery, RI Fish & Wildlife, Box 218, W. Kingston, RI 02892. They can also be downloaded from the DEM website at www.dem.ri.gov, by clicking on "Wildlife" under "Topics". All applications must be postmarked by October 30th. Permits will be chosen by lottery for one of the four-week periods. A map, permit card, car tag and additional regulations will be provided to successful applicants. -30- |
