DEM ANNOUNCES CLOSURE OF COMMERCIAL STRIPED BASS FISHERY FOR FLOATING FISH TRAPS PROVIDENCE - The Department of Environmental Management has announced that the commercial striped bass fishery for floating fish traps has harvested its 61,909-pound yearly quota and will close on Friday, October 4. The fishery is scheduled to reopen in January.Every year, Rhode Island receives a quota of striped bass from the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission, and manages harvest of that quota to its best advantage. A portion of the quota is allocated to the floating trap fishery; the remainder is allocated by setting possession limits for other harvesters of striped bass. The use of projected landings, closures, and modified possession limits are fisheries management tools to keep the Atlantic states within their assigned coast-wide quota while making fish available to commercial fishermen and consumers throughout the longest period of time. -30- |
