PUBLIC WORKSHOP TO REVIEW NEW COMMERCIAL FISHING LICENSING PROGRAM SET FOR SATURDAY, OCTOBER 19 AT URI

PROVIDENCE -- A public workshop will be held on Saturday, October 19 for fishermen and the general public to review, discuss and offer comments on new draft regulations developed by the Department of Environmental Management to implement Rhode Island's new commercial fishing licensing program.

Rhode Island's commercial fishing licensing system will change as of January 1, 2003 in accordance with a new law passed this year by the General Assembly. DEM has drafted new regulations to implement the new legislation, and these regulations - defining what new licenses will be available in 2003 - will be discussed in detail at the workshop on Saturday.

The workshop will be held at Weaver Auditorium, Coastal Institute, URI Main Campus, 1 Greenhouse Rd., Kingston. It will begin at 8:30 a.m. and run until 1 p.m. The workshop is co-sponsored by the URI Coastal Institute and Sea Grant Program.

The draft regulations and associated management plans are available online on DEM's website at www.dem.ri.gov, by clicking on "Topics," then "Marine Fisheries."

On October 29, a public hearing on the proposed regulations will be held in the Corliss Auditorium at the URI Bay Campus at 6 p.m. The public comment period will remain open until November 4. For further information, contact Brian Murphy in DEM's Division of Fish & Wildlife, at 423-1941 or email him at bmurphy@dem.state.ri.us
