DEM INVITES PUBLIC TO THREE UPCOMING EVENTS MARKING 25/30 YEARS OF ENVIRONMENTAL PROGRESS IN RHODE ISLAND

State House Reception and Symposium on October 24th

Dinner Celebration on October 25th

PROVIDENCE -- The Department of Environmental Management invites the public to attend and participate in several upcoming events marking DEM's 25th anniversary and the 30th anniversary of the Clean Water Act.

On October 24, from 3 to 5 p.m. in the State Room, Governor Almond will host a State House reception. Featured speakers will include former Governor Joseph Garrahy, EPA Region I Administrator Robert Varney, former DEM Director Robert Bendick, and former Save the Bay Director Trudy Coxe. A slide show, highlighting major environmental milestones over the past twenty-five years, will be presented by DEM Director Jan Reitsma. Citizens who have volunteered to monitor water quality in their local lakes and rivers will be honored.

Immediately following the State House reception, DEM Director Jan Reitsma and former Directors Bill Harsch, Bob Bendick, Louise Durfee, Mike Annarummo and Andy McLeod will take part in a thought-provoking panel discussion, moderated by Trudy Coxe, on the environmental challenges and opportunities facing Rhode Island in the 21st Century. The program will take place from 5 to 6:30 p.m. in the Department of Health Auditorium in the Cannon Building, located at 3 Capitol Hill in Providence.

On Friday evening, October 25, DEM's 25th Anniversary Dinner Celebration will be held at Valley Country Club in West Warwick. The event will feature an enjoyable evening of dinner and dancing. The menu includes a full course dinner of antipasto, ziti with marinara sauce, boneless stuffed breast of chicken, potato, vegetable, and ice cream roll. Tickets are $25 per person and may be purchased through Monday, October 21. For more information and tickets, contact Rayna Santoro at 222-4700 ext. 2409.

A photo exhibit, "An Act Written in Water: 30 Years of Progress in Rhode Island," will be on display in the State House Rotunda from October 22-24. The exhibit will also be display at the Providence Place Mall Sky Bridge on November 2; at DEM's 235 Promenade Street Headquarters from November 4 - 14; at Warwick Mall from January 6 - 12, 2003; and at the Blackstone Valley Tourism Council from January 21 - February 7, 2003.

The Department will host a workshop on water quality monitoring in Rhode Island on Wednesday, November 13, from 4-7 p.m. in the Cafeteria at DEM Headquarters at 235 Promenade Street in Providence. This free workshop is for agencies, watershed groups, municipalities and others interested in learning about water quality monitoring programs.
