DEM ANNOUNCES PRUDENCE/PATIENCE ISLANDS ARCHERY DEER SEASON

PROVIDENCE - The Department of Environmental Management's Division of Fish and Wildlife has announced that the 2002-2003 archery deer hunting season on Prudence and Patience Islands will be open from November 1 through January 17, or until the quota of 275 deer has been reached. Either sex deer may be taken throughout the season. Hunting hours will be from one-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset. Archers with a valid archery deer permit may also take raccoon and fox (no bag limit for either species) on Prudence Island during legal deer hunting hours.

This year, DEM is offering an incentive for archers to take antlerless deer. Hunters checking in antlerless deer will be allowed to purchase an additional Prudence Island permit to take a deer of either sex from November 16 through the end of the season.

As in past years, archers must have in their possession a current Rhode Island hunting license and a current Prudence/Patience archery deer permit. Archers must also carry on their person a valid archery proficiency card and written permission to hunt on private land, countersigned by the chief of police or his island representative.

Hunting on state management areas is permitted by reservation only, from opening day, November 1, through November 15. These regulations will be strictly enforced. The reservation form denotes the specific dates and locations that may be hunted. Reservations were selected earlier by lottery and are non-transferable. All reservations are full for the season. Hunting without a reservation is permitted on state lands beginning on November 16 and extending to January 17, or until the quota has been reached.

All deer, whether taken on state or private land, must be tagged immediately, have a leg seal attached, and be checked at the island check station before being taken off the island. The primary Prudence Island check station is located near the lighthouse at Al Hibbard's garage, 392 Narragansett Avenue. Mr. Hibbard may be reached by phone at 683-1619. All deer permits look similar. Patience Island deer may be checked on Prudence Island, or at a mainland vendor deer check station.

DEM reminds hunters that all deer permits look similar. To avoid invalidating the permit by tagging the deer with an incorrect tag, the Department suggests that hunters with multiple deer permits mark the back of their tag, in waterproof ink, with the permit type.

Archery deer permits for Prudence and Patience Islands may be purchased at hunting license vendors and also on Prudence Island at Prudence Variety store, located near the ferry dock. A list of vendor deer check stations and additional hunting information can be found in the 2002-2003 hunting and trapping abstract, available from DEM at 222-6647, or from hunting license vendors. The abstract can also be found online at DEM's website at www.dem.ri.gov by clicking on "Publications" then "Fish and Wildlife Regulations".
