DEM ANNOUNCES THAT COMMERCIAL FISHERY FOR SPINY DOGFISH WILL RE-OPEN ON FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 1 PROVIDENCE - The Department of Environmental Management has announced that the commercial fishery for spiny dogfish will re-open in Rhode Island waters on Friday, November 1, coinciding with the reopening of the fishery in federal waters.The National Marine Fisheries Service has established a coast-wide quota of four million pounds for spiny dogfish. The quota is divided into two periods: May 1 - October 31, 2002 (2,316,000 pounds), and November 1, 2002 - April 30, 2003 (1,684,000 pounds). All spiny dogfish landed for sale in from Maine through Florida will be counted toward the commercial quota, regardless of where they were harvested. The possession limit within federal waters and for federal permit holders will be 300 pounds of spiny dogfish per day from November 1 through April 30, or until the six-month quota is harvested. There will be no possession limit within state waters for spiny dogfish caught by fishermen who possess a state commercial license but do not possess a federal permit. -30- |
