DEM NOTES PRIVATE SALVAGE OPERATION NEAR PRUDENCE ISLAND SET FOR HOLIDAY WEEKEND

PROVIDENCE - A private salvage operation to raise a construction barge from 22 feet of water southeast of Potters Cove off Prudence Island will take place over the holiday weekend, according to the Department of Environmental Management.

DEM was notified yesterday afternoon by the US Coast Guard of the sunken barge, and sent a team to investigate. The barge owner removed the fuel tank, and DEM found no sign of pollution.

The 40-foot barge is owned by Narragansett Dock Works, Inc. of Narragansett. Its location is marked by one red buoy to the south of it, and two white buoys to the north. The barge, and the salvage operation, present no danger to navigation, according to DEM.

The announcement of the salvage operation is being made because it may be seen by boaters and by residents of Prudence Island, and, without knowing its cause, could cause the public some concern.
