DEM SEEKING NOMINATIONS FOR TWO VACANCIES ON RI MARINE FISHERIES COUNCIL
Nominations Also Sought for Membership on New Commercial Fishing License Review Board

PPROVIDENCE - The Department of Environmental Management is seeking nominations for two representatives of the commercial fishing industry to serve on the RI Marine Fisheries Council. DEM is also seeking nominations for five individuals to serve on the department's new Commercial Fishing License Review Board established under the state's new licensing statute.

The Council nominations are sought to fill two vacancies, both representing the commercial sector. The Council, chaired by the DEM Director or his designee, is made up of eight private citizen members, including three from the commercial fishing industry, three from the sport fishing industry, and two with expertise in conservation and fisheries management. Members advise the director of DEM on a wide range of commercial fishing regulatory issues.

The new Commercial Fishing License Review Board is being established to hear requests for reconsideration of preliminary denials of commercial fishing licenses under the new licensing regulations that take effect on January 1. After considering each request for reconsideration, the review board will make a recommendation to the department, which can affirm, deny or modify the board's recommendation. The Board's five members will include three commercial fishermen, one from each of the fisheries sectors - finfish, shellfish, and crustacean; one person with a professional knowledge of fisheries management; and one attorney, licensed to practice law for at least five years and with environmental law expertise.

Nominations for both the RI Marine Fisheries Council and for DEM's Commercial Fishing License Review Board should be forwarded to Brian Murphy, DEM Division of Fish and Wildlife, 3 Fort Wetherill Road, Jamestown, RI 02835, by January 10. Nominations can also be submitted by fax to Murphy at (401)-423-1925, or by e-mail to him at bmurphy@dem.state.ri.us. For additional information, contact Murphy at 423-1941.

Nominations for both the Council and for DEM's Commercial Fishing License Review Board will be forwarded to DEM Director Jan Reitsma, who will recommend appointments to the Governor. Members will be appointed by the Governor, subject to confirmation by the state Senate.
