DEM ANNOUNCES THAT COMMERCIAL BLACK SEA BASS AND SCUP FISHERIES WILL REOPEN ON JANUARY 1 PROVIDENCE - The Department of Environmental Management announces that the commercial black sea bass and commercial scup fisheries, both closed for the past month, will reopen on January 1 with new annual quotas.Beginning January 1, the daily possession limits per commercial fishing vessel will start at 10,000 pounds of scup and 1,000 pounds of black sea bass. These possession limits may be adjusted, depending upon landings. The possession limit for scup will decrease to 1,000 pounds when 75 percent of the January through April coast-wide quota of 5.78 million pounds allocated by the Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council and the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission is landed. The yearly quota of black sea bass allocated to Rhode Island by the Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council and the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission is 366,520 pounds for the coming year. A management plan for the year will be developed by DEM with advice from commercial fishing representatives. -30- |
