DEM ANNOUNCES CURRENT 2002 COMMERCIAL FISHING LICENSES ARE VALID THROUGH JANUARY 14TH

PROVIDENCE -- The Department of Environmental Management has announced that all current 2002 commercial fishing licenses will be valid through midnight on January 14, 2003. The six-month licenses for commercial fishermen issued in July 2002 were set to expire at midnight tonight, unless they have been renewed.

DEM has mailed approximately 3,000 license renewal applications to current holders of Rhode Island commercial fishing licenses, and has issued more than 1,000 license renewals to date.

All current daily possession limits will be applicable during the two-week extension. As of January 1st, the possession limit for fluke is 700 pounds; for black sea bass, 1,000 pounds; and for scup, 10,000 pounds. Federally-permitted vessels cannot take or possess spiny dogfish; however, there is no possession limit for spiny dogfish for vessels that possess solely a Rhode Island license. The possession size for lobster increases to 3 5/16 inches on January 1.

Applicants may renew their licenses in person at DEM's Office of Boat Registration and Licensing at 235 Promenade Street in Providence, Room 360, from 8:30 a.m. to 3: 30 p.m. Monday through Friday, or by mailing their renewal applications to the address listed above.

Individuals with renewal application questions may contact DEM's Office of Boat Registration and Licensing at 222-6647 for further information.
