DEM ACCEPTING APPLICATION REQUESTS FOR PRUDENCE/PATIENCE ISLAND ARCHERY DEER RESERVATION LOTTERY PROVIDENCE - The Department of Environmental Management's Division of Fish and Wildlife is accepting requests for applications for 2003 Prudence/Patience Island archery deer reservations. The applications must be postmarked no later than August 19.A reservation must be obtained in order to hunt deer with archery on Prudence and Patience Islands management areas during the first two weekend and weekday periods of the special season, which begins on October 24. One hundred thirty reservations for each weekend and weekday segment are available and will be issued via a computer-generated lottery system. Applicants will receive their reserved dates by mail in early September. There will be two lotteries. Those who hunted last year and returned their mandatory harvest record cards will be given preference in the first lottery. Remaining applicants will be entered into a second lottery to fill unfilled slots. The quota will remain at 275 deer. Although hunters will be allowed to harvest one deer of either sex throughout the entire season, those checking in an antlerless deer will, as an incentive, be allowed to purchase an additional permit. The permit will be valid for a deer of either sex, at any time during the season, which ends on January 11, 2004, or earlier if the quota has been reached. Applications can be obtained in person from DEM's Office of Boat Registration and Licensing at DEM Headquarters at 235 Promenade St. in Providence; at the Fish and Wildlife main office at the Stedman Government Center in Wakefield; and at its Great Swamp field office in West Kingston. They are also available online at www.dem.ri.gov, by clicking on Publications, then Application Forms. Applications may also be obtained by mail by sending a legal size (9 1/2" by 4") self-addressed, stamped envelope to Deer Lottery, DEM Division of Fish and Wildlife, PO Box 218, West Kingston, RI 02892. Hunters must postmark and return completed applications along with a self-addressed, stamped business-sized envelope to the West Kingston address by August 19 to be eligible for a reservation and the lottery. Two hunters may apply on one application; however, a hunter may not be on two separate applications. Duplicate, inaccurate, incomplete, or illegible forms will not be accepted.
