COMMERCIAL SCUP FISHERY FOR GEAR TYPES OTHER THAN FLOATING FISH TRAPS TO CLOSE ON SUNDAY, AUGUST 24 PROVIDENCE - The Department of Environmental Management has announced that the commercial fishery for scup for gear types other than floating fish traps will close in Rhode Island waters on Sunday, August 24, because the 350,597-pound quota allocation for the July 1 ¾ Sept 15 period is expected to be harvested by that date. The fishery is scheduled to reopen on September 16th with a possession limit of 100 pounds per vessel per day.Rhode Island receives a yearly scup allocation from the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission. DEM then allocates it by sector as well as quota periods via regulation to make the fish available to commercial fishermen and consumers throughout the longest period of time possible -30- |
