DEM ANNOUNCES CLOSURE OF COMMERCIAL STRIPED BASS FISHERY FOR ALL GEAR TYPES EXCEPT FLOATING FISH TRAPS

PROVIDENCE - The Department of Environmental Management has announced that the commercial striped bass fishery for all gear types except floating fish traps will close on Friday, September 12 because the September 1 through December 31 quota of 36,099 pounds is expected to be harvested by that date.

If the floating fish trap sector does not harvest its entire 95,979-pound quota by October 15, the remainder of its quota will then be available for harvest by all gear types.

Rhode Island receives a yearly striped bass allocation from the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission; DEM then allocates it by sector as well as quota periods via regulation to make the fish available to commercial fishermen and consumers throughout the longest possible period of time.
