DEM, RHODE ISLAND FORESTERS OFFERING WALKS IN THE FOREST ON OCTOBER 16 AT APEIRON INSTITUTE IN COVENTRY

PROVIDENCE -- The Rhode Island Chapter of the Society of American Foresters (RISAF) and the Department of Environmental Management have announced their eleventh annual "Walk in the Forest" program and invite school classes and the general public to participate. The program is designed to educate the public about the benefits of healthy forests and how foresters care for them.

This year's "Walk" will be held on Thursday, October 16, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Aperion Institute for Environmental Living in Coventry. The property is also home to Camp Hamilton, owned and run by the Nickerson Community Center. Rhode Island foresters will be present to take small groups on tours through the forest. Individual tours will take approximately one hour. Directions to the site are available online at www.apeiron.org.

The Apeiron Institute for Environmental Living, located on a 68-acre forested tract at 451 Hammet Road in Coventry, is a non-profit organization working to create ecologically healthy communities by bringing sustainable living practices from around the world to this region. The organization supports environmentally friendly building technologies, renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, and green business practices. The Institute recently worked with the Society of American Foresters to complete a forest stewardship plan for the property.

Teachers and group leaders who plan to attend with groups of 10 or more participants must make "Walk" reservations by Friday, October 10. The general public should come at the top of the hours to be included in school tours or with a special group for adults. To make reservations or ask questions, contact Paul Dolan of DEM's Division of Forest Environment at 647-3367.
