News Release RI Department of Environmental Management 235 Promenade Street, Providence, RI 02908 (401) 222-2771 TDD/(401) 222-4462
DEM AND WOONASQUATUCKET WATERSHED COUNCIL TO HOST OCTOBER 21 GREENSPACE PROJECT MEETING FOR GLOCESTER RESIDENTS The Woonasquatucket Watershed Greenspace Project is a regional planning effort to inventory the resources that residents of each community in the Woonasquatucket River Watershed - Glocester, Johnston, North Providence, North Smithfield, Providence, and Smithfield - consider important and would like to protect. The resources identified by all communities in the watershed are being mapped, and the information will help local governments update their local comprehensive plans. The project is funded by the US Department of Agriculture's Forest Service. At the October 21 meeting, Dodson Associates, consultants for the project, will present the final inventory of natural, cultural and recreational assets in Glocester that were identified by local residents in three previous meetings, together with overlays showing recommended priorities for each of the three areas. According to Scott Millar, DEM Project Manager, "Once the information is mapped in each of the Woonasquatucket communities, people can begin to make links between special places in their community and across the watershed. In the end, we will have a network of potential greenspaces to protect, restore, or redevelop, depending on what the communities decide is best for each of those places." Regional meetings will be held in the next few months to talk about ways to make these connections. Residents who have questions about the meeting, or are interested in finding out about upcoming meetings in other communities, can contact Jennifer Pereira at the Woonasquatucket River Watershed Council at 861-9046 or via e-mail at jpereira@woonasquatucket.org. -30- |
