DEM NOW ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR PERMITS TO HUNT GEESE IN SOUTH SHORE MANAGEMENT AREA FIELDS PROVIDENCE - The Department of Environmental Management is now accepting applications for permits to hunt for Canada geese on South Shore Management Area fields in Matunuck.The fields will be open, by reservation only, during the split goose-hunting season. Those with permits will be allowed to hunt for a single half-day period during the first part of the split season, which runs from November 22 through November 30. During the second portion of the season, December 6 through Sunday January 25, those with permits will be allowed to hunt on two non-consecutive half-day periods each week. Special permits to hunt the goose fields are available from DEM's Division of Fish and Wildlife Great Swamp Field Office on Liberty Lane in West Kingston. Permits may be obtained in person or by sending a self-addressed, stamped, business-size envelope to SSMA Goose Permit, DFW, Box 218, West Kingston, RI. 02892. Hunters must provide their telephone numbers with their requests. Additional information, including a map of the area, will be provided to each permitted hunter. Hunters with special permits may then make their hunting reservations up to seven days prior to the desired hunting date. Reservations must be made by calling the Great Swamp office at 789-0281 on weekdays between 9 a.m. and noon. Those hunting the South Shore Management Area goose fields must use a minimum of 24 goose decoys. A maximum of four permitted hunters is allowed for each hunting party. As is the case for all waterfowl hunters 16 and older, goose hunters must have a valid Federal Migratory Bird Hunting and Conservation Stamp (duck stamp), a Rhode Island Waterfowl Stamp, signed in ink across the face, and a Harvest Information Program (HIP) permit while hunting. A free HIP permit can be obtained at state hunting license vendors, town halls and the Division of Fish and Wildlife. -30- |
