DEM ANNOUNCES INCREASE IN COMMERCIAL SUMMER FLOUNDER POSSESSION LIMIT PROVIDENCE - The Department of Environmental Management announces that the daily summer flounder possession limit per vessel will increase from 450 to 1,000 pounds effective Saturday, December 6th. The 1,000-pound possession limit applies to appropriately licensed commercial fishers with a Rhode Island summer flounder exemption certificate.Based on currently reported catch rates, DEM's Division of Fish and Wildlife projects that the quota allocation of 274,093 pounds of summer flounder for the November through December period will not be harvested prior to December 31. The increase in the possession limit is intended to help ensure that the entire allocation for the fishery is harvested by December 31. The action is part of an ongoing effort to manage the annual allocation of summer flounder that Rhode Island receives from the Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council and the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission. -30- |
